Framingham Risk Calculator
Using Canadian Lipid Guidelines

About This Application

The Canadian Cardiovascular Society Dyslipidemia Guidelines came out in 2009.  It became apparent that applying these guidelines produced somewhat different results than were obtained by the older calculators.  They also allowed incorporation of significant family history and hsCRP could be used to clarify risk for patients at moderate risk in certain age groups.  While these algorithms are likely to improve prediction in primary prevention, they are complex to apply, and electronic decision support would make application much easier.  I had used previous versions of the Framingham calculator daily in my practice, and found that they saved a good deal of time for decisions which had to be made several times a day.  The new guidelines required a new tool, and it seemed that nothing was available.

This calculator is based on the tables developed and distributed by D’Agostino et al. (3) and by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (1).  Because decisions on ASA are often made in the same patients using the same risk profiles, ASA recommendations are included in the calculator, although they are probably not as well established as evidence based in primary prevention.  The calculator is developed in Javascript and requires Javascript to be enabled on your browser.  It functions well in Firefox and Internet Explorer, but has not been tested on other browsers.  Source files are included for download as a .zip file so that users might download files to a local computer or make modifications if they wish.  Please consult instructions for downloading files.  There are no restrictions on availability or use.
