Who To Screen

Screening applies to patients without known disease of the cardiovascular system and involves primary prevention of disease.  Those with known cardiovascular disease do not require screening, and will have a lipid workup done as part of management of established disease.  The following list actually comprises case finding rather than true screening:

1.      Men ≥40 years of age, and women ≥50 years of age or postmenopausal

2.      All patients with the following conditions, regardless of age:

·        Diabetes

·        Hypertension

·        Current cigarette smoking

·        Obesity

·        Family history of premature CAD (<60 years in first-degree relatives)

·        Inflammatory diseases (systemic lupus erythematosis, rheumatoid

·        arthritis, psoriasis)

·        Chronic renal diseases (eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2)

·        Evidence of atherosclerosis without clear evidence of established disease.

·        HIV infection treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy

·        Clinical manifestations of hyperlipidemias (xanthomas, xanthelasmas, premature arcus cornealis)

·        Erectile dysfunction

3.      Children with a family history of hypercholesterolemia or chylomicronemia
