Who To Screen
Screening applies to patients without known disease of the cardiovascular system and involves primary prevention of disease. Those with known cardiovascular disease do not require screening, and will have a lipid workup done as part of management of established disease. The following list actually comprises case finding rather than true screening:
1.
Men ≥40
years of age, and women ≥50 years of age or postmenopausal
2.
All patients
with the following conditions, regardless of age:

Diabetes
·
Hypertension
·
Current
cigarette smoking
·
Obesity
·
Family history
of premature CAD (<60 years in first-degree relatives)
·
Inflammatory
diseases (systemic lupus erythematosis, rheumatoid
·
arthritis,
psoriasis)
·
Chronic renal
diseases (eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2)
·
Evidence of
atherosclerosis without clear evidence of established disease.
·
HIV infection
treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy
·
Clinical
manifestations of hyperlipidemias (xanthomas, xanthelasmas, premature arcus
cornealis)
·
Erectile
dysfunction
3.
Children with a
family history of hypercholesterolemia or chylomicronemia
