Rapid Sequence Intubation

The need for intubation does not come up often, but when it does there is not much time to prepare.   Having an organized plan and procedural checklist is helpful.   There are preferences to consider for specific indications such as head injury, hypotension or pediatric applications.   Indications for each drug are considered along with pediatric doses where they differ from those for adults.

This outline assumes the need for immediate intubation, and follows the "Crash Airway" algorithm. Optimal ventilation and intubation techniques are reviewed. Failure to secure an airway along this path leads to need to consider the "Failed Airway" algorithm, along with need for cricothyrotomy. Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) bailout is sometimes necessary in remote areas lacking experience or adequate help. The obvious questions raised by the latter technique regarding safe transport are addressed and referenced.
