Proteinuria is usually and incidental finding, and often ignored because it is assumed to be a false positive finding. Microalbuminuria, on the other hand, is often sought as a predictive marker for renal disease in diabetics when it is actually within normal range in non-diabetics. Non-albumin proteinuria can portend serious disease, but we need to seek it out. This reference classifies these disorders in a way I can understand, and presents a flow chart to aid in early investigation.
