Newer concepts in pain control and medical expulsive therapy have improved the management of renal colic. Because of these changes, passage of larger stones is often possible without surgical intervention. NSAID therapy has proven superior for pain control and the use of alpha blockers and calcium channel blockade has reduced time to stone passage and time to discharge.
